“Give the gift of health insurance, 12 months FREE child health cover”
Are you concerned with the increasing health care costs AND the lengthening waiting lists?
Parents are concerned about health care costs and long waiting times when trying to protect their family’s health.
Early enrolment for children may mean a lot more conditions covered in the future which may be considered pre-existing if health insurance is taken later in life.
Here are examples of health procedures for children that often have long waiting times in New Zealand’s public health system, along with their estimated costs in private healthcare:
Tonsillectomy (Tonsil Removal)
• Public Waiting Time: Often several months to over a year, depending on the region and urgency.
• Estimated Private Cost: $4,00 to $5,500.
Grommet Insertion (Ear Tubes)
• Public Waiting Time: Can be up to a year or longer, especially for non-urgent cases.
• Estimated Private Cost: $2,200 to $3,500.
Orthopedic Surgery
• Public Waiting Time: Typically, six months to over a year, depending on the severity and urgency.
• Estimated Private Cost: $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the complexity.
Adenoidectomy

• Estimated Private Cost: $3,500 to $5,000.
Hernia Repair Surgery

• Estimated Private Cost: $4,000 to $6,000.
Surgical Correction of Strabismus (Eye Misalignment)
• Public Waiting Time: Can range from several months to over a year, depending on priority and availability.
• Estimated Private Cost: $3,500 to $7,000.
Elective Heart Procedures (e.g., Minor Cardiac Corrections)
• Public Waiting Time: Often long due to prioritization of more urgent cases.
• Estimated Private Cost: $10,000 to $50,000 or more, depending on the procedure.
Around 150 children are diagnosed annually with cancer in New Zealand. Some common cancers in children are leukemia, brain tumours, and lymphomas.
Private treatment costs for cancer can range from $50,000 to $150,000+. In June 2023, over 51,000 patients, including children, waited more than four months for their first specialist assessment (FSA).
By May 2024, this number had increased to over 65,000. These statistics highlight the growing challenges within New Zealand’s public health system, particularly concerning timely access to medical care for children as well.
