Are You Insured Properly?

Recently, we experienced a period of unsettled weather due to Cyclone Vaianu. This cyclone brought heavy rain and strong winds across the North Island. While some areas were significantly impacted, our region fared comparatively well this time.

Bursts of heavy rain, surface flooding, and isolated slips were reported. Fortunately, most weather-related issues were resolved quickly as conditions eased. Authorities remind us to stay alert as we move through autumn and winter. We must be prepared for further weather events, as conditions can change rapidly.

Preparing Your Property for Severe Weather

I thought this was a great time to remind you of all the things you can do to minimize damage to your property. Most damage isn’t caused by the storm itself but often by water that has nowhere to go. A few routine checks each season can significantly reduce costly repairs and stress.

Here are some essential tips:

  • Clear gutters, downpipes, and drains. Blockages are one of the biggest causes of internal flooding.

  • Check ground drains and soak pits. Flush them with a hose to ensure they’re flowing freely.

  • Ensure downpipes discharge away from foundations. They should not empty at the base of walls.

  • Make sure soil slopes away from the house. Add simple gravel channels or spoon drains along problem areas.

  • Avoid piling mulch or soil against exterior walls. This traps water and can lead to issues.

  • Protect low points. If you have a basement or internal garage, consider a non-return valve on drains to stop backflow.

  • Replace any loose or cracked roof tiles or screws. This can prevent leaks during heavy rain.

  • Check flashing around chimneys and skylights. Ensure they are secure and watertight.

  • Trim trees. Especially branches overhanging roofs or rubbing on gutters.

  • Remove dead or leaning trees early. Wind-saturated soil is a major failure point.

  • Keep trees clear of powerlines and buildings. This reduces the risk of damage.

  • Consider professional pruning for large trees. This can help reduce risks before winter storms.

  • Install a surge protector for electronics. This protects your devices from power surges.

  • Know how to turn off power and water quickly if needed. This can be crucial during emergencies.

Importance of Proper Insurance Coverage

Having the correct insurance policies and insured levels is also very important. It ensures that you are protected against potential losses. Make sure to review your insurance coverage regularly. This way, you can adjust it according to any changes in your property or circumstances.

If you have questions about your insurance or need help understanding your options, I am here to assist you.

Conclusion

I hope these tips help you prepare your property for the months ahead. Stay safe, and if you need any further insurance advice, I would love to help.
