Weather Events - Preparation is Key!

Are You Insured Properly?

Recently we have experienced a period of rather unsettled weather, driven largely by Cyclone Vaianu, with its associated heavy rain and strong winds across the North Island. While parts of the country were significantly impacted, our region has fared comparatively well this time.

Bursts of heavy rain, surface flooding, and some isolated slips were reported, but most weather‑related issues were resolved quickly as conditions eased. The authorities have reminded us to stay alert as we move through autumn and winter, reminding us to be prepared for further weather events, as conditions can change quickly.

I thought this was a great time to remind you of all the things you can do to ensure as little damage as possible to your property. Most damage isn’t caused by the storm itself— but often by water that had nowhere to go. A few routine checks each season can significantly reduce costly repairs and stress.

  • Clear gutters, downpipes, and drains—blockages are one of the biggest causes of internal flooding.

  • Check ground drains and soak pits; flush them with a hose to ensure they’re flowing freely.

  • Make sure downpipes discharge away from foundations, not at the base of walls.

  • Ensure soil slopes away from the house, not toward it. Add simple gravel channels or spoon drains along problem areas.

  • Avoid piling mulch or soil against exterior walls as this traps water.

  • Protect low points - If you have a basement or internal garage, consider a non-return valve on drains to stop backflow.

  • Replace any loose or cracked roof tiles or screws.

  • Check flashing around chimneys and skylights.

  • Trim trees—especially branches overhanging roofs or rubbing on gutters.

  • Remove dead or leaning trees early—wind-saturated soil is a major failure point.

  • Keep trees clear of powerlines and buildings where possible.

  • Consider professional pruning for large trees before winter storms to reduce this risk.

  • Install a surge protector for electronics.

  • Know how to turn off power and water quickly if needed.

  • Having the correct insurance policies and insured levels is also very important

I hope this helps with getting your property ready for the months ahead, stay safe and if you need any further insurance advice I would love to help.
