Insurance insecurity for Tesla truck owners

They might look indestructible, but can they line up a deductible?

According to Torque News, some insurers are canceling Cybertruck policies because of the low number of the vehicles coming off the line.

Sales are down, too. Tesla sold 4,306 Cybertrucks in the second quarter, less than half the number in the same period last year, according to The Cool Down, a site that says it’s “all about making it easy to help yourself while helping the planet.”

Torque News says it was first to report last year that Geico was issuing denials. In that story, from last October, the auto news provider summarized the answer it got from the insurer this way: Some Cybertruck policies were cancelled because of gross vehicle weight restrictions or “potential challenges with parts availability for repair shops,” Geico said.

“Since that (October) story, we have seen several Cybertruck owners, using other insurance providers, sporadically getting denied coverage,” Torque News writes.

Back then, it was the shape and materials raising safety concerns that gave insurers pause, according to the publication. But now some insurers are cutting off owners trying to renew because of the lower production, saying “they cannot properly assess the fleet-wide repair costs and liability,” Torque News wrote.

Maybe Elon Musk should insure them?
